Sol Hess – Waiting For The Cricket Choir (CD/LP)

Si la musique folk n’a eu de cesse de faire des allers et retours entre présent et passé, grands espaces et trottoirs bondés, elle s’offre par la voix de Sol Hess une forme d’élévation hors d’un temps et d’un espace donnés. A la manière d’un rayon de lumière qui rentre et sort, brille puis s’éteint, son nouvel album prend la forme d’un carnet intime qui ouvre presque involontairement une voie vers la transcendance. Figure désormais bien installée de l’underground français, Sol Hess échappe à chaque fois aux catégorisations trop faciles et à la répétition. On a ainsi pu le croiser en frontman d’un groupe post-punk fiévreux (Sweat Like An Ape !), en chef d’un orchestre post-jazz aux accents noisy (Sol Hess & The Boom Boom Doom Revue) ou en patron défricheur de label (pour son exigeante maison Club Teckel). Et cela sans compter ses collaborations avec le milieu de la BD, de l’illustration et du spectacle vivant.

En ayant largué les amarres de la ville qu’il habitait depuis longtemps, le musicien né en Angleterre semble avoir fait de la place dans son inspiration. Waiting For The Cricket Choir est un disque extrêmement personnel et intime, marqué par le silence de la campagne où il vit désormais, par la marque d’un temps qui s’étire jusqu’à l’extase et d’un dépouillement qui substitue la quête d’une vérité personnelle à celle de l’ascétisme. Poursuivant ainsi l’entreprise de The Missing View, son premier album solo paru en 2021, Sol Hess a resserré sa formule autour d’une simple guitare classique, de sa voix et de quelques arrangements fantômes qui hantent les pistes de ce disque enregistré à la maison et mixé de manière discrète par Rubin Steiner, collaborateur de longue date. Malgré ce minimalisme assumé, cette nouvelle collection de chansons donne une impression de liberté et d’honnêteté rares. C’est dans les entrelacs de ses mots et de ses notes de guitare que Sol Hess découvre un monde foisonnant, où l’on peut au choix rester caché ou s’abandonner, en laissant la lumière prendre toute la place.

Whereas folk music has been known to wander back and forth between past and present – from the great outdoors to crammed city sidewalks – it finds in Sol Hess’ voice a certain boundlessness and timelessness. His new album reveals itself in an ever-shifting beam of light, taking the form of a personal diary that almost unintentionally leads a way to transcendence. A key player of the French underground scene, Sol Hess invariably seems to avoid easy categorization or repetition. He has thus amongst other things been known to front fiery post-punk band Sweat Like An Ape!, conduct noisy post-jazz ensemble Sol Hess & The Boom Boom Doom Revue, or manage his own audacious record label, Club Teckel. And that is without mentioning his collaborations with graphic novelists, illustrators, and the world of live-entertainment and theatre.

After two decades in Bordeaux, the British-born musician has left the city and seems to have made room for inspiration. Waiting For The Cricket Choir is an extremely personal and intimate record, significantly defined by the silence of the countryside he now resides in, the stretching of time to a very state of bliss, and a skinning process that appears to favor the pursuit of an inner truth to the quest for asceticism. Following his solo debut The Missing View, released in 2021, Sol Hess has stripped his craft to classical guitar, vocals and a few phantom arrangements that haunt the tracks of this home-recorded album, and entrusted its subtle mix to long-time collaborator Rubin Steiner. Despite its minimalistic approach, this new collection of songs conveys an impression of freedom and rare honesty. Sol Hess unveils a luxuriant world – interwoven between his words and guitar notes – where one can either hide or abandon one’s self altogether, and let the light in for good.
